A young and unskilled fairy godmother that ventures out on her own to prove her worth by tracking down a young girl whose request for help was ignored.
Chuck says:
Though well-intentioned, this take off of Elf can’t find its own way and is content with simply mirroring the premise and intent of that holiday classic.
Jillian Bell is Eleanor, a fairy godmother-in-training who’s sent to Earth to help beleaguered television producer Makenzie (Isla Fisher) through her troubles. Problem is, she’s responding to a letter that’s 20 years old. No matter, Eleanor is intent on helping, her innocence and ignorance of the way the world works leading to one mishap after another.
There are laughs here and there, while Bell and Fisher are always a delight to watch. Unfortunately, in the end the script’s lack of originality proves its undoing, as the movie becomes nothing but a predictable slog.
