Films such as this are of the most frustrating sort as signs of brilliance are brought low by misconceived moments or scenes that simply don’t work. The veteran cast, which includes Sam Neill, Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska and Rainn Wilson do their best to bring a sense of sincerity to the heavy-handed premise and at times they succeed in making it bearable and poignant. However, in the end, something genuine is missing from this obvious exercise in manipulation. 2 ½ Stars. 97 minutes. Rated R.
