This disappointment relies on far too many gimmicks in an effort to put a distinctive turn on Dickens’ classic novel and falls flat at every turn. The titular character (Dev Patel) appears as his adult self throughout, commenting of the key events of his life as they play out, a post modern approach that adds nothing to the story. Even worse, director Armando Iannucci sprints through the story, never allowing the audience to process what’s going on or the emotional beats of the movie to be processed or breath. This is a Cliff’s Notes version of the Cliff’s Notes of the novel. And don’t get me started on the stunt casting…
