A freewheeling take on visionary inventor Nikola Tesla (Ethan Hawke), his interactions with Thomas Edison (Kyle MacLachlan) and J.P. Morgan’s daughter Anne (Eve Hewson), and his breakthroughs in transmitting electrical power and light.
Chuck says: There’s a lot going on in director Michael Almereyda’s ambitious look at the titular, elusive inventor. The post modern approach – look, Anne’s using a laptop to look Tesla up on Google – Oh no, Telsa is singing “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” at karaoke- is a fun angle but it happens too infrequently to really take hold. The period details are spot on, the performances are sly and smart but the lack of a consistent tone hurts the movie in the end.
Pam says: This is an absolute mess of a film, but within that mess are some real treasures.
